I agree 100% with you. To me it is the most accurate depiction of high school (in America at least) on film. The way how the camera moves around the high school catching a glimpse of everyone during their normal day but capturing it just long enough for the viewer to gain an emotional bond with the character so that when the heavy parts of the film come, the viewer is emotionally stirred.
The really amazing thing about the film is that it doesn't seek to find answers for why the kids shoot up the school. It's not the least bit political. It only shows what happens with no seeking of any real reason or explanation. That's also the very erie thing about this movie. It only shows what actually happens and the fact that it's really quiet through most of the movie is terrifying.
Writer/Director Gus Van Sant handled this movie brilliantly and won two very deserved awards in 2003 at the 56th Cannes Film Festival, Best Director and the Palme D'Or, the award for the best film shown in the festival.
what makes it great is it lets the viewer expereance it. and what made the expereance was they didnt rush it and took time to go back over stuff. they allso stuck with the shots for just the right time witch is relitively incredibly long compared to other films.
he did deserve those awards.
take care of yourself too charlie. it is nice hearing from you again.
Yeah, the film was written and directed by Gus Van Sant, whose previous work includes "Drugstore Cowboy", "My Own Private Idaho", "Finding Forrester", and probably his best or most well known work "Good Will Hunting". It's not a documentary, it's a fictional film about two teens who shoot up their high school and obviously the film just leaves you thinking Columbine but is really more of a portrait regarding high school. You should check it out. It will either be in the new release section or drama section of your local video store.
